Hunter Steakhouse: Prime Cuts in Oceanside

April 22, 2014 5:48 pm

Serious appetites are welcomed at Oceanside’s Hunter Steakhouse. For over 40 years, this two-restaurant chain has been wowing local diners, and with a recent purchase in 2008 that saw the eatery redecorated and revitalized, it’s poised to enjoy many more. The menu here is classic steakhouse fare, so expect all your favorite classics. Prime cuts seared perfectly are the order of the day. Regulars rave about the center cut Angus top sirloin, and if you’re looking for a burst of extra flavor the bacon-wrapped steak stuffed with mushroom duxelle and topped with more sautéed mushrooms is a must-order. Sides are handled nicely, with the shrimp cocktail and Gouda croquettes proving to be favorites. Desserts are decadent and overwhelming – try the Chocolate Oblivion.

Elfin Forest Recreational Preserve: Outdoor Escondido

April 15, 2014 12:25 pm

If you want to experience the incredible diversity of Southern California nature, schedule a hike through the Elfin Forest Recreational Preserve. Located at the foot of the Santa Rosa mountains, this preserve is dedicated to honoring the unique scrubland and low bushes that characterize the area’s botanical resources. A 748 acre protected reserve, it was first opened in 1991 and serves multiple purposes – in addition to being a valuable educational and recreational resource, the preservation of the plant life helps preserve the Escondido Creek watershed. Over eleven miles of trails wend through the property, with easy elevation changes and plenty of switchbacks making it appropriate for hikers of all ages. The botanical trail is one of the most popular walks, but there’s plenty to see no matter where you go. There are six designated overlook points with shade and picnic tables for when you want to stop and have lunch. Bicycles and horses are also welcome on certain trails, as are dogs on leash.
