Oceanside Beaches: Hit The Sand

It’s all well and good to decide to spend a day at the beach, but unfortunately many of the best expanses of sand in the San Diego area are monopolized by massive crowds, boardwalk hucksters and a whole lot of noise. Luckily, Oceanside offers a a variety of places to enjoy a relaxing beach day without feeling like you're laying out in a sandy sardine can.

Surfers flock to the Jetties, also known as Harbor Beach, to catch decent waves in front of an appreciative crowd. There's plenty of parking as well as lifeguards, bathrooms, showers, and places to eat.

A few miles south, you’ll find secluded Buccaneer Beach, which is the most private beach in the area while still being easily accessible. It's the smallest beach in the area, but it offers plenty of fun activities either in the water or at the park across the street.

For a quieter beach that's family friendly, head straight to Breakwater Way. Located just south of Oceanside Harbor, Breakwater Way offers showers, restrooms, picnic tables and barbecue grills, as well as a volleyball court.

The boardwalk area by the foot of Mission Boulevard known as the Strand has a little more in the way of amenities, and is a great place for a morning jog before hopping in the water for relief from the heat.

La Jolla Sea Cave Kayaks: Tour The Coast From The Inside Out

One of the most interesting landmarks in the San Diego area is the La Jolla sea caves—the only land-access caves on the California coast. There are seven caves in total, and the best way to experience them is by kayak. Taking a small boat into the caves lets you admire the gorgeous majesty of these surprising rock formations. Launching from La Jolla Shores, the tours are guided by well-trained kayakers who will point out native wildlife, including sea turtles and leopard sharks, as you paddle toward the caves. Once inside, you’ll be given the chance to paddle and explore the cave for about five minutes, but the journey there is more than half the fun. It’s probably a better experience for first-time kayakers than seasoned adventurers, but for a unique family activity in La Jolla it can’t be beat. For a special thrill, ask your guide about “kayak surfing.”

If you get hungry along the way, there’s a fair amount of food available, from sandwiches and hot dogs to a variety of ethnic cuisines. There's even a Ben & Jerry's to satisfy your sweet tooth. San Diego Botanic Garden: The Kingdom Of The Plants

This gorgeous botanical garden is devoted to showcasing the wide variety of plant life that thrives in Southern California’s diverse biomes. Originally a private estate, the gardens were deeded to the city of Encinitas in 1957 and carefully tended to create a gorgeous atmosphere for exploration and contemplation. Now stretching over 37 acres, this is a great place to spend a sunny afternoon. Some of the more interesting areas of the Garden include the groves of rare bamboo plants, which are said to comprise the largest collection of bamboo species in the United States, as well as the gorgeous desert gardens. All told, over 3,000 unique plant species are represented here, from lush rainforests to prickly cactuses. Take a second and wander through the cork oak forest, populated by giant, twisting trees that curve and curl spectacularly. At $12 for adults and $6 for children, admission costs are quite reasonable, and the Garden also hosts a variety of interesting events throughout the year.

Birch Aquarium: Explore the Deep Blue Sea

UC San Diego is a popular school for aspiring ocean explorers thanks to the world-class Scripps Institution of Oceanography. But you don’t need to enroll to visit Birch Aquarium, the public outreach arm of the institute. This fantastic science center provides an excellent look at the variety and complexity of underwater life, with over 5,000 animals representing almost 400 different species on display. Some popular exhibits include the Shark Reef, which duplicates the tropical environment that hosts reef sharks, wobbegongs, Port Jackson sharks, and other predators; the Tide Pool Plaza that lets visitors get hands-on with starfish, hermit crabs, and other shallow-water denizens with staff supervision; and the astounding seahorse exhibit, which not only showcases these unusual creatures but also paying tribute to the aquarium’s dedicated work in restoring the population of these fragile animals in the wild. Overall, even though this aquarium isn’t the biggest in terms of floorspace, it has more than enough to keep any junior Jacques Cousteau busy.
